1) Imperialism
- Taking over other nations/countries for resources/etc.
- Creating and glorifying a huge/powerful military.
- Extreme pride for one's nation/country.
- Theory of evolution ~ "Survival of the Fittest."
- "Survival of the Richest" ~ referring to imperialism.
- Nation - A group of people with a shared history (religion, race, culture, etc.)
- Country - Has a border + government... can be one or more nations
- Group of people of same race, color, language, religion, etc.
- Countries/Nations that are "friendly" or at least have promised to not fight each other or help each other in war.
9) Franco-Prussian War + Otto von Bismarck + Alsace-Lorraine
- Otto von Bismarck unified German people in one empire.
- During the Franco-Prussian War, Bismarck took Alsace-Lorraine from France.
- Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary ("The Central Powers")
- Kaiser Wilhelm angers Russia by letting Germany's treaty with Russia lapse (expire).
- Russia retaliates by forming an alliance with France (Germany's enemy).
12) Triple Entente
- France, Russia, Great Britain ("The Allies")
- Major ethnic group living mostly in Eastern Europe + the Balkans (Russians, Serbians, Bosnians, Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Polish, etc...)
- Austria-Hungary takes over Bosnia to stop a possible Slavic empire from forming.
- Austria-Hungary is afraid that the Slavic people living in their country will try to join the new Slavic empire that Serbia is trying to create (this will one day become Yugoslavia).
- A Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, shoots the Archduke Ferdinand in the Bosnian capital city, Sarajevo.
- Serbians want Austria-Hungary OUT of Bosnia so they can create a Slavic empire called Yugoslavia.
16) Who declared war on who?
- Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia (to avenge the Archduke F.F.)
- Russia declares war on Austria-Hungary (to help out Russia's ally, Serbia)
- Germany declares war on Russia (to help out Germany's ally, Aust.-Hung.)
- Germany declares war on France, also (b/c they are ally of Russia)
17) Why did we (USA) stay out of the war until 1917?
- Americans did not want to fight in Europe...
- However, a German U-boat (submarine) sunk the British ship, Lusitania...
- 128 Americans died on Lusitania, angering many Americans...
- The "final straw" was when Americans intercepted the "Zimmermann Telegram." This letter was a telegram from Germany to Mexico. Germany promised Mexico that it would get back all the land it lost to the USA (see slide below) if Mexico helped them fight the USA.
