Hello! Today we answered the following essential question: "What is Sharia Law?" This is a legal system that exists in some Muslim communities around the world (mostly the Middle East and Africa today) that is based in laws found in the Quran (Koran). Punishments for breaking these laws can be very steep, and, to convey this, we discussed the following two movie clips:
Nigeria's Sharia Law (stoning)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJYCiKFbKoU

After these, we looked at the murder and rape rates of countries from around the world and noticed that most of the bottom countries on these lists are Islamic countries... we wondered if Sharia Law had anything to do with the lower crime rates there. Also, we split into 6 groups and looked at 6 separate Sharia Laws and discussed their possible benefits and drawbacks.
